Live Review: Matt Helm Scream, Dawn Iulg, Joshua Park — Burlap and Bean (4/17/10)

The Burlap and Bean is always a great place to go if you want to hear some good live music.  So, with Matt Helm Scream, Dawn Iulg, and Joshua Park all on the same bill – I had to go!  Joshua Park had the opening set which he played solo. Park delivered an excellent solo acoustic set making it quite apparent that sometimes less is more.  I don’t think I’ve seen Dawn Iulg before but I will say that she had a very nice set filled with some moving folk tunes.  It sounded great to have Jeff Hiatt accompany Iulg on upright bass.  Matt Helm Scream had the honor of ending the night.  I’ve seen Matt Helm Scream several times in the past but I truly believe that this was the best performance to date.  For this show it was a full-band with:  Matt Helm (vocals, guitars), Raphael Cutrufello (vocals, piano), Dean Gorfti (drums), Philip D’Agostino (bass), Brad Hinton (guitar, banjo).  I’m not sure if most of the banter between band mates was a result of nervousness or just something to pass the time while tuning but it was funny.  It’s always nice to hear Helm dish out those indie, folk, rock songs.  I only hope that this was not the last Matt Helm Scream show because great music and good times should never come to an end.

Album Review: Peasant – ‘Shady Retreat’

Shady Retreat, the latest album by Peasant, will make your ears smile.

In many ways it feels as though we’re all invited to a secret listening party where not even Peasant (Damien DeRose) is aware of our presence.  And in this approach we get a full-length album of honest songs with story perfect songwriting.  Shady Retreat is a truly delightful album to listen to.

“Thinking”, a percussive driven (equal parts shaker and piano) lead track that reminds us “we just can’t go on without thinking”. Most of the album seems to flirt with the happy, upbeat melodies vs. serious, often sad, real lyrics dichotomy.  A dichotomy that makes this album burst with feeling and a sense of optimism. “What can I say when I don’t want to pry but I think that something is wrong?” I don’t know the answer but “Pry” is a wonderful song.  The horse galloping taps of “Prescriptions” is a nice touch. “Tough” is perfect!  “Hard Times” is brilliant, haunting, and inspiring.  The voice heard on all of these tracks is that of Peasant (Damien DeRose) and probably the best instrument of them all.  DeRose’s voice is gentle but assertive, yet never too excessive in getting his lyrics across with a tone so peaceful that is always refreshing to listen to.  Seriously, I just love this album so much.

Live Review: Up the Chain, Hezekiah Jones, Anna K Jarosz — Tin Angel (4/8/10)

An excellent show at the Tin Angel this past Thursday night.

Anna K Jarosz
The show opened with a lovely solo set by Anna K Jarosz, a Brooklyn singer-songwriter by way of Scotland.  Jarosz played the keyboard and sang on all the songs with a subtle sincerity that made her music so enjoyable.  Wow, just an all around great set of music and a wonderful way to start the night.

Hezekiah Jones
Aah, then it was time for Hezekiah Jones who played as a trio for most of the set.  Hezekiah Jones (Raphael Cutrufello) creates some truly amazing music that is very moving.  Hearing “Traffic To The Sea” almost brought me to tears because of its flawless performance and sheer musical beauty.  The award for Best Use of an iPhone during a set goes to Ross Bellenoit on “I’ve Got A Little Room” for adding the meow track.  So, it still stands that Hezekiah Jones’ musical greatness is a given.

Up The Chain
The final set belonged to Up The Chain, a Philly band with a rather diverse style of music which is a great thing.
