It was a great night of new music previews at the Tin Angel last night with Adrien Reju and Suzie Brown sharing a bill.  Everyone in attendance was treated to hearing Brown’s new, unrecorded album live .  Adrien Reju closed the show with a set of new material as well as some songs from “A Million Hearts” – that is a great album and from what I heard last night Reju’s next album is sounding great too.  Hanging out at the Tin Angel and hearing such beautiful live music was the perfect way to spend a Saturday night.

I was unable to get a video for every set but Hezekiah Jones, Birdie Busch, The Welcome Wagon, and Andrew Rose Gregory were all great.  The videos I do have are just 2 songs from Hezekiah Jones‘ set which was great.  I love it when the Jones’ get together and play music.  Good times!  Birdie Busch played a duo set with Carl Cheeseman that was beaming with captivating musical elegance that only Birdie can deliver. Birdie, way to “get your Friday on” – hehe!  The Welcome Wagon performed a set of beautifully peaceful music that I enjoyed.   Andrew Rose Gregory and band had a good opening set and it was fun to hear the “Double Rainbow Song” live.  So intense!

Andrew Rose Gregory: Johnny Brenda's 9-17-10

Yes, 2 consecutive nights of incredible music at Johnny Brenda’s and life is good.

Live Review: Illinois, Electric City, AKUDAMA @ Johnny Brenda’s (Sep 16, 2010)

Illinois: Johnny Brenda's (9-16-10)

Illinois was incredible Thursday night at Johnny Brenda’s.  They kicked-off their set with “Oh Asia” which definitely got the crowd excited — if they weren’t already.  Man, that banjo really adds a great tone to the song. Illinois’ set included some new songs from their forthcoming album to be released sometime early 2011.  From the new songs I heard I’ll definitely keep an ear out for when the new album drops.  It was nice to see the return of Andrew Lee, plus there was a new guy on a keys/synth and a 2nd drummer.  Yes, Illinois had 2 drummers for this show and as redundant as it might sound Illinois made it work.  It made my night that Illinois ended their set with “If You Love Something” (please see the video below).  That’s one of my favorite Illinois’ songs and one that I don’t hear live often enough.  Maybe it was the enthusiastic crowd or the near intimate setting of Johnny Brenda’s but seeing Illinois that night reminded me of all their amazing shows at The Moose in Doylestown and how I miss those days.  Thank you to Illinois for all the great music and memorable performances.  Hip…hip…HOORAY!

Electric City: Johnny Brenda's (9-16-10)

Wow, seeing Electric City was a lot of fun.  It’s not often (if ever) that I get to see a DJ and MC work their musical magic live on stage like DJ Skipmode and Mighty FlipSide Esq. do.  DJ Skipmode is a turntablist who creates beats in real time and it’s very interesting to watch.  Mighty FlipSide Esq. had an improvisational freestyle session with the audience.  He asked everyone in the audience to hold up an item while he created a rap to include those items.  It was very impressive to see Mighty FlipSide Esq. skills and the crowd really went wild then.  Seeing Electric City was so much fun that I hope I get to see DJ Skipmode and Mighty FlipSide Esq. again.

I was running late so I missed AKUDAMA’s set.

Upcoming Show: September 18th – Andrew Lipke debuts ‘The Plague’ @ Tin Angel

Andrew Lipke When: Saturday, September 18  — 7:30pm

Where: Tin Angel [20 S. 2nd St, Philadelphia, PA]

What: Debut performance of Andrew Lipke’s long-awaited The Plague, a pop-infused modern song cycle of apocalyptic vignettes performed by Lipke and the Azrael String Quartet

TICKETS!

Multi-instrumentalist Andrew Lipke calls “The Plague” his most ambitious project to date—a pretty serious claim from a Barrymore-Award winning musician who projects consistently showcase extraordinary range. Whether slashing into hard rock, finger-picking through crisp Americana and or balancing menacing pop songs atop the heavy sighs of strings, Lipke’s genre-bending catalogue filters classical musical training as splintered through a love for rock and roll.

“This is going to be the first performance of new material I’m working on for my next record,” says Lipke.  “It’s a collection of apocalyptic vignettes that have musical motifs that exist through string quartet parts written for each song.”

I was treated to a performance by Andrew Lipke with a string quartet during The Philly Folk Parade – May Residency @ The Fire this past May and it was an absolutely moving set.  Needless to say, if you’re free this Saturday night I highly recommend you consider attending this show and witness Andrew Lipke’s musical brilliance in person.

Live Review: Cowmuddy, Chris Schutz and the Tourists, The Fractals @ The Grape Room (Sep 14, 2010)

The Grape Room

Tuesday night at The Grape Room (Manayunk/Philadelphia, PA) was like hanging out in the perfect listening room.

The Fractals delivered an excellent set which goes to show that sometimes loose, somewhat laid back, fun sets are the most memorable.  I’ve seen The Fractals a few times before but last night was my favorite performance of theirs to date.  Sometimes we can all use some good rock/pop with latent jazz elements styled music in our lives.  You can catch The Fractals at The Grape Room the following Tuesdays in September for their residency.

I was reintroduced to Chris Schutz and the Tourists last night for I’m positive that I’ve seen them before at some point.  Anyway, I liked their set and their pleasingly diverse sound.  Their songs where good enough to hold my musical interest which is all I could have hoped for.

Finally it was time for Cowmuddy (and band: Ross Bellenoit, Freddie Berman, and Jim Stager) to take the stage.  First off, I’ve seen Cowmuddy enough times to know how incredible a singer/songwriter he is, plus I’m all for the style of Folk Rock that Cowmuddy is known for.  Cowmuddy is also a great storyteller and you never know what gem of knowledge he will impart but it’s always positive with subtle comical delivery.  By the way, I have no clue what that special guest musician was playing (I’ll call it a futuristic melodica for it had an impressive electronica sound) but it created some lush soundscapes.  So, thanks to Cowmuddy for great music and laughter – 2 things that make life better.

All in all, it was a great night of music at The Grape Room.
