5. The Purveyor’s Chosen Night
On Songs For a Red Bird we get another wholehearted taste of Psalmships’ ghost-folk style. If you cherished any of Psalmships’ previous releases like Hello, Traitor, Hymn of Lions, and many more then you’re really in for a treat with this release. As far as I’m concerned, Psalmships (Joshua Britton) owns the ghost-folk genre. There is always something so haunting yet brilliant about Psalmships’ music—I love it.
Songs For a Red Bird with tracks like “Buffalo Jane”, “I Am the Sea”, and “Carolina, Ease Your Heart” that reveal Psalmships’ recipe for greatness—a near minimalist acoustic musical approach with boundlessly emotional songwriting yields beautifully haunting songs. Stylistically speaking “The Purveyor’s Chosen Night” stands out because it comes across as a bigger sound than most of the tracks on this album. The last song, “Hypochondriac” is perfection. It’s a definite wow-moment, one when you’ll truly understand Joshua Britton’s masterful singer-songwriter abilities.
