The Philly Folk Parade – May Residency @ The Fire: Final Night (May 25, 2010)

Last week’s (May 18th) Philly Folk Parade, hosted by Chris Kasper, was a flawless flow of music like a prefect parade procession.  The show began with the relentless, face-melting rock of The Doublewides – that band is musically impressive and extremely entertaining.  Then a switch to the back room for a fine solo set by Marc Silver.  And back to the front for Birdie Busch’s set which was a duo with Ross Bellenoit – sweet, sweet folk music and no complaints here.  Stage switch to Brittany Ann – I’m not familiar with her music but it sounded great – nice touch with the harp.  Then it was time for that night’s host: Chris Kasper, an amazingly talented singer/songwriter who was joined by an equally talented group of musicians for a truly outstanding set.  The final set in the back room went to Hey Nude Friend I’m Tired, an interesting collaboration between Michael Baker (The Spinning Leaves) and Todd Henkins (The Great Unknown).  Cowmuddy, a definite must-see artist, closed the show with a great folk rock set and good times were had by all.

This week’s (May 25th) Philly Folk Parade show was extraordinary.  I’m almost positive that I’ve seen Wissahickon Chicken Shack at least once before but I’m afraid I wasn’t paying much attention then.  Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed their music for their sound is a bit too diverse for me to even begin to classify but it’s great.  Up The Chain (only 2/5ths of the band: Reed Kendall and Philip D’Agostino) played a nice set in the back room.  Then back to the front of the room for Andrew Lipke with a string quartet.  Lipke is an excellent singer/songwriter and hearing his music performed with such beautiful string arrangements was spectacular.  The great music continued with a super set by The Matt Helm Scream – if you don’t know that band you ought to.  Jim Boggia followed with a wonderful solo set that made me realize I should see Boggia live more often.  To the back room again for Daniel of the Moonlight who played what sounded like traditional folk songs something quieting fitting for this parade.  I have nothing but respect for Hezekiah Jones (Raphael Cutrufello) because he truly is an exceptional singer/songwriter and I was so excited to see how the final set was going to play out.  Well, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many Joneses on stage at once.  So, as the set went on it seemed like another Jones took to the stage and added to the harmonious wall of sound.  Wow, I couldn’t have thought of a better ending to The Philly Folk Parade May residency at The Fire – perfect!

A huge thank you goes out to The Philly Folk Parade for making Tuesdays in May such memorable, music filled nights – a music lover’s dream come true!

The Spinning Leaves host The Philly Folk Parade: Night #2 @ The Fire

Last night (May 11, 2010) was the 2nd night of The Philly Folk Parade Tuesday nights in May residency at The Fire (412 W Girard Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19123) and as expected with the caliber of talent on the bill it was phenomenal.  Johnny Miles and The Waywards opened the show with a great performance that made me realize that I really need to pay more attention to Miles’ music – it’s that good!  Oh my, The Phil D’Agostino Quintet is amazing!  Now, you might have seen Phil D’Agostino play bass (or several other instruments) as a member of a number of Philly bands but none of that compares to seeing The Phil D’Agostino Quintet live – you owe it to yourself to do so.  Hearing Spirit and Dust playing the back room stage led to one of those rare but perfect moments when you realize you now have another new favorite band.  Oh, I love when that happens!  The captivating quality of Psalmships’ music is unreal, spectacular, and breathtaking.  Last, but by no means least, was The Spinning Leaves – the hosts for the night and they did a great job of it and had an excellent closing set.  Also, on the bill were Shannon Pelcher and Hoots & Hellmouth who each did their parts to add to the wonderful night of music.  Thank you to everyone who played!

I’ll see everyone next week for night 3 (May 18, 2010) of The Philly Folk Parade residency.  Chris Kasper will be hosting that night with: The Doublewides, Birdie Busch, Cowmuddy, and more artists.

The final night of The Philly Folk Parade – May 25, 2010 will be hosted by Hezekiah Jones.

Hezekiah Jones and Family Sings Greatest Will Oldham Music @ World Cafe Live

Hezekiah Jones & Family (5/9/10) By: Lisa Schaffer

The music this night proved to be absolutely amazing and simply unreal.

Sunday night (May 9, 2010) I went to World Cafe Live to see Hezekiah Jones and Family perform Will Oldham’s music.  I don’t know Will Oldham’s music so I decided to attend the show with the hope of hearing “I Am a Cinematographer” – the only Will Oldham song I know.  Actually, the only reason why I know that song is because of Hezekiah Jones.  I thought that I might hear a song or two that I recognized and not realize that it was a Will Oldham song but that never happened.  Even still, Hezekiah Jones and Family had a real awe-inspiring set.  And it was quite amazing to see the effort and skill they put into their performance to bring Will Oldham’s music to life that night.  Unfortunately, like I said before, I’m not familiar enough with Oldham’s music to tell you the setlist but I do know that they closed the night with “I Am a Cinematographer” which was the icing on the cake.

All I have to say is – Hezekiah Jones (Raphael Cutrufello) and Family (Brad Hinton, Andrew Keenan, Joshua Park, Kiley Ryan, Joe D’Amico, Daniel Bower, Philip D’Agostino, Michael Baker, Barbara Gettes, Bob Beach, and Emily Bates) played with such gusto as if they were some folk force to be reckoned with.

Thank you, all!

The Philly Folk Parade: May Residency — The Fire

Currently, The Philly Folk Parade is a 4 shows, every Tuesday night in May, residency at The Fire.  The event was organized by The Spinning Leaves and Hezekiah Jones.  Each Tuesday will feature a different host and a different bill of artists performing.

The first night of the residency (May 4, 2010) was hosted by The Great Unknown.  The sets alternated from the front stage to the back room allowing for more music which was a great idea.  So, between the 2 stages there were performances by:  Jack Ohly, Sean Hoots, Sisters 3, Warren Longmire (spoken word poet), The Great Unknown, Joshua Park, and Toy Soldiers.  All the artists performed such great sets that made for a truly incredible night of music.

It’s really nice to see The Philly Folk Parade growing and influencing the Philly music community in a positive way.  With the momentum and energy this parade has I see nothing but great things for The Philly Folk Parade in the future.

Live Review: Matt Helm Scream, Dawn Iulg, Joshua Park — Burlap and Bean (4/17/10)

Matt Helm Scream 4-17

The Burlap and Bean is always a great place to go if you want to hear some good live music.  So, with Matt Helm Scream, Dawn Iulg, and Joshua Park all on the same bill – I had to go!  Joshua Park had the opening set which he played solo. Park delivered an excellent solo acoustic set making it quite apparent that sometimes less is more.  I don’t think I’ve seen Dawn Iulg before but I will say that she had a very nice set filled with some moving folk tunes.  It sounded great to have Jeff Hiatt accompany Iulg on upright bass.  Matt Helm Scream had the honor of ending the night.  I’ve seen Matt Helm Scream several times in the past but I truly believe that this was the best performance to date.  For this show it was a full-band with:  Matt Helm (vocals, guitars), Raphael Cutrufello (vocals, piano), Dean Gorfti (drums), Philip D’Agostino (bass), Brad Hinton (guitar, banjo).  I’m not sure if most of the banter between band mates was a result of nervousness or just something to pass the time while tuning but it was funny.  It’s always nice to hear Helm dish out those indie, folk, rock songs.  I only hope that this was not the last Matt Helm Scream show because great music and good times should never come to an end.

Live Review: Up the Chain, Hezekiah Jones, Anna K Jarosz — Tin Angel (4/8/10)

An excellent show at the Tin Angel this past Thursday night.

Anna K Jarosz
The show opened with a lovely solo set by Anna K Jarosz, a Brooklyn singer-songwriter by way of Scotland.  Jarosz played the keyboard and sang on all the songs with a subtle sincerity that made her music so enjoyable.  Wow, just an all around great set of music and a wonderful way to start the night.

Hezekiah Jones
Aah, then it was time for Hezekiah Jones who played as a trio for most of the set.  Hezekiah Jones (Raphael Cutrufello) creates some truly amazing music that is very moving.  Hearing “Traffic To The Sea” almost brought me to tears because of its flawless performance and sheer musical beauty.  The award for Best Use of an iPhone during a set goes to Ross Bellenoit on “I’ve Got A Little Room” for adding the meow track.  So, it still stands that Hezekiah Jones’ musical greatness is a given.

Up The Chain
The final set belonged to Up The Chain, a Philly band with a rather diverse style of music which is a great thing.

Adrien Reju: Barnaby Bright: at Tin Angel (1/2/10)

Adrien Reju

It was just last Saturday that I was at the Tin Angel for the Chris Kasper and The Great Unknown show.  They are some of my favorite musicians and they put on an excellent show.  So, seeing Adrien Reju and Barnaby Bright at the same venue on the same day of the week but a week later had a slight déjà vu feel.  Anyway, on with the current show at hand.  The three member NY based band Barnaby Bright opened the show with a good performance.  I really liked their music and give them some originality points for instrument selection.  Was that some kind of organ Rebecca was playing?  Also, what was that music box sounding instrument Nathan was playing? Whether I get an answer or not will not change that fact that Barnaby Bright creates good music and is worth a good listen.

Adrien Reju had the headlining slot and deservedly so because she is extremely talented, her music is incredible, and her voice is amazing.  This time Adrien Reju had a full band with her: Freddie Berman (drums), Jaron Olevsky (keys), Nate Skiles (bass), and a guitarist.  Reju began her set with “Heartless” – that’s my jam!  Truthfully, I like all the songs on her current album, A Million Hearts (here’s the proof ), so what a treat it was to hear those songs live again.  The set ended with an encore – a cover of “Fever”.  Wow, that was great!

The Blinkin Lincoln: 1 Year Anniversary Celebration (11/28/09)

Lincoln Memorial (Washington DC)

On Saturday night I went to The Blinkin Lincoln to witness the 1 year anniversary celebration show that included: Andrew Lipke, Zach Djanikian, Cowmuddy, and Chris Kasper all on the same bill.  The show began with Andrew Lipke performing an incredible solo, acoustic set.  Zach Djanikian and band (Jaron Olevsky-bass, a drummer, Andrew Lipke-keys, for a few songs) followed with a good set and although I’m not too familiar with Djanikian’s music I really enjoyed listening to it. Then it was time for Cowmuddy and band (Chris Kasper-guitar, Freddie Berman-drums, and Jim Stager-bass) and that was one great set.  Not only do I like Cowmuddy’s (Michael McShane) music but it’s always fun to see what random bits of wisdom he might share with his audience.  Last, but by no means least, was Chris Kasper who performed a solo, acoustic set that was so amazing.  Kasper even played a few brand new songs (with Freddie Berman on drums) which was a nice treat.  Needless to say, it was a fantastic night of music at The Blinkin Lincoln and the perfect anniversary celebration.  So, happy 1 year anniversary to The Blinkin Lincoln and I wish you many more.

Bojibian, Hair Rocket, The Fleeting Ends @ Milkboy Coffee (11/7/09)

Unfortunately I don’t get to “show blog” as much as I would like to but I’m trying to change that.  It’s nice to be able to get back to something I love to do.  So, without further ado here’s a review of last night’s Bojibian, Hair Rocket, and The Fleeting Ends show at Milkboy Coffee (Ardmore, PA).

I believe I’ve seen Bojibian before in a much more all out rock and roll show but this night they brought more of an acoustic rock show.  With only 3 members (the drummer was sick) bass, electric guitar, and the singer playing acoustic guitar as well as kick drum they delivered a good set.  If my past recollection of Bojibian is correct I think I like the acoustic Bojibian more.  Oh well, see Bojibian for yourself and you decide.

HairRocket

Hair Rocket – a band that I had only heard about but had not seen live until now. Yes, that band was the reason why I was at Milkboy that night.  Anyway, Hair Rocket was definitely worth checking out and I wish I had done so sooner.  Even with a missing member (the person in charge of the ceremonial hair collection for the Hair Rockets) the band sounded great and I like their indie rock vibe.  I’m so glad I finally got to see Hair Rocket live.  I think I might have found myself a new favorite band.  Needless to say, there will be more Hair Rocket shows in my future.

This night happened to be the CD Release Show for The Fleeting Ends.  I don’t really have much to say about The Fleeting Ends because I wasn’t able to see their entire set.  Although, I can say that I heard a few good rock/pop tunes from that band.

All in all, good live music = good times and blogging fun.

The Review: A Look At Shows Past

Anson B Nixon Park 002

I would love to be able to blog as soon as I’ve seen a show but lately that just isn’t possible.  I guess I go to too many shows and just don’t always have the time to sit down and write something “blog worthy”.  So, for now this is how we’ll catch-up on show reviews.
