Live Review: Philly Sings Philly – Tuesday Residency at The Fire (11/1)

Philly Sings Philly 2011

In its second year, Philly Sings Philly returns to The Fire every Tuesday night in November.  Philly Sings Philly is about contemporary Philly artists covering songs by other Philly artist.  So, it’s not solely a bunch of Philly musicians covering songs written by the artists in that same bunch of Philly musicians – those artists involved actually get quite creative.  As long as it is Philly music then you might hear it covered on any given Tuesday night at The Fire during Philly Sings Philly.  It’s that “anything is possible” vibe that makes Philly Sings Philly so much fun and an event that you owe yourself to experience.

Last night was the opening night of Philly Sings Philly and it was great.  Ron Gallo opened the show and Ryan Tennis & The Clubhouse Band closed the show – with Sean Hoots, The Spinning Leaves, Suzie Brown, A Fistful of Sugar, Kiley Ryan and more playing as well.  Some of the highlights from last night include: The Spinning Leaves covering Chubby Checker’s “Limbo Rock” with a limbo contest, Brad Hinton Band with a very rocked out version of “Albert Hash” by Hezekiah Jones, A Fistful of Sugar’s take on Boyz II Men was very entertaining, and Kiley Ryan’s cover of Chris Kasper’s (The Lowlands) “To The Other Side” was beautiful.  All of that is only a very small portion of last’s night’s great show.

Thank you to Brad Hinton for organizing the Philly Sings Philly residency.

Hopefully I’ll see you next Tuesday (and every Tuesday in November) at The Fire for another night of Philly Sings Philly.

I did not capture any video or photos from last night but please check out Lisa Schaffer Photography and MAK for possible material.

Live Review: Joshua Park, Joe D’Amico, Ivan & Alyosha, Levee Drivers at The Fire (3/1/11)

abstract 3-1-11

Yes, I had to get my Tuesday night music fix – after all, I am a music junkie.  So, with some of my favorite bands on the bill I knew The Fire was the place to go.  I go wherever the live music takes me.

The show began with a set by Joshua Park.  Since I haven’t seen Park in quite some time it was really nice to see him again.  Park began his set as a duo with Brad Hinton (lap steel, vocals).  Then Philip D’Agostino (bass) and Kevin Killen (drums) joined Park and Hinton on stage.  Hearing the new song, “Weariness”, was a real treat.  I also enjoyed Park’s cover of Hezekiah Jones’ “Traffic To The Sea”. Of course there were several other songs in the set before the final song, “Just To Be With You” – a great ending!  Joshua Park is a great singer/songwriter with a powerful, beautifully toned voice and has a very gifted group of musicians for a band.  Man, I only wish that Joshua Park had more shows.

Almost two weeks ago I saw Joe D’Amico at World Cafe Live for his Asleep In My Shoes CD Release Show and it was amazing.  I loved the fact that I got to see Joe D’Amico again last night.  D’Amico’s music is so good.  D’Amico was playing with a talented group of musicians: Philip D’Agostino (bass), Brad Hinton (lap steel, vocals), Bethany Brooks (keys, vocals) and Kevin Killen (drums).  “Monsters” opened the set followed by “Asleep In My Shoes”.  There were several other songs before the set ended with “Late Nights (Early Mornings)”.  Oh, let’s not forget the crowd participation portion…a kick-flip on a skateboard from a fan during the mid-set intermission – very entertaining.  If there is one thing that I absolutely love about Joe D’Amico’s music especially when I hear it live is the ability to witness those killer, mesmerizing jams (towards the end of the songs) first hand.  Wow!

Well, it was getting late for a Tuesday night so I only saw part of Ivan & Alyosha’s set.  Ivan & Alyosha is a five member band from Seattle, WA.  I think it’s the four guitars that help create that huge wall of sound, rock style.  All in all, I kind of liked what I heard.

I left early so I didn’t get to see Levee Drivers.

Live music = good times!

Live Review: Hezekiah Jones, Naughty Nurses, Drunken Barn Dance, Sisters 3 @ The Fire (8/1/10)

Hezekiah Jones | photo: Lisa Schaffer

I usually stay away from show-going on Sunday nights so I can be well rested for the looming possibility of a manic Monday.  But when I heard Hezekiah Jones and Sisters 3 were playing The Fire (Philadelphia, PA) my live music addiction kicked in and my need for rest was a passing thought.

Sisters 3 performed a very lovely set Sunday night opening with an acapella tune that showcased the flawless harmonies and how well Cassandra, Annachristie, and Beatrice voices accompany each other.  So, take those harmonies, add: keys, acoustic guitar, percussive instruments, excellent songwriting – and you can understand why I stood in awe as I watched Sisters 3 create musical magic on stage that made my ears smile.

I think I might have seen Drunken Barn Dance before but I’m not sure.  Oh well, that’s neither here nor there because I’m positive I saw Drunken Barn Dance Sunday night and they were AWESOME!  They are a band with 3 guitars, bass, and drums that have a killer live energy that goes well with their folk rock style.  It’s refreshing to see a band not afraid to be alive and animated on stage and kudos to the lead singer/guitarist for that catchy kick/hop step.  Well, Drunken Barn dance is from Michigan so I’m not sure when I’ll see them again but I hope it’s not too long.

The special surprise guest of the night was… Naughty Nurses, a 4 member band (vocals, acoustic guitar, and banjo) from Philly.  They performed a lyrically fun, musically interesting, unamplified set giving them a minimalist, indie vibe and I enjoyed it.

The penultimate set belonged to Hezekiah Jones who was joined by 5 other members of the Jones family.  I’ve seen countless Hezekiah Jones sets and they are often my most memorable musical experiences (this night included) because the music is unmistakably good.  Those seemingly endless jams weaved into the songs were unreal.  It’s so exciting to see great musicians having fun jamming out on stage.  I’m so lucky that I get to see Hezekiah Jones, one of my most favorite artists, play live as often as I do.

In honor of Jerry Garcia’s birthday Chris Kasper, Drew Egmont, Kiley Ryan, Philip D’Agostino, Ross Bellenoit, and Jonah played a set of Grateful Dead tunes to end the show.

I loved the somewhat loose sets and the “we’re all among friends” atmosphere that was in The Fire that night.  MAN, it just doesn’t get better than that.

Album Review: Berry Jones – ‘Tonight’

Berry Jones - 'Tonight' Berry Jones
Tonight
(Blue Floor Music, 2010)

Track List:
1. Bouffant Bang
2. Philly Night
3. You Don’t Know
4.  Your Old Ways
5. Tonight
6. Baby Baby
7. Hold You
8. Work It Out
9. Barrow Bar Blues

‘Tonight’ is a fantastic concept album created by Jim Thomas (Philadelphia based singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer) under the name Berry Jones which honors two of Thomas’ musical idols, Berry Gordy and Quincy Jones.  With that in mind, it should be no surprise that this album is heavily rooted in the Motown sound with pop elements reminiscent of the late, great Michael Jackson all spanning several decades from the late ‘50s until present day.  To say the least, Tonight is a very impressive throwback dance album.

From the moment the beat of “Bouffant Bang” hits you until the album wraps you’ll be grooving along while you listen to this album.  “Philly Night” has an energy and feel to it that would make one believe it once was a great Philly summer anthem or maybe it’s destined to become one.  Although “Your Old Ways” ultimately carries similarities to the other songs on the album there is something different about that track that I love.  It could be the fact that I’m a sucker for semi-slow sad songs with an underlying message of hope.  The album ends with “Barrow Bar Blues” a track with a tasteful display of anger and attitude.

Even though Tonight is a fun album and could possibly awaken the dancer in all of us it’s executed in such a serious and professional way that really makes this album work.  I’ve listened to this album several times and it simply gets better and better with each listen.  The Berry Jones website states, “we play dance music” – oh, yes they do!

Berry Jones ‘Tonight’ was created by Jim Thomas (piano, synthesizer, and Rhodes) with the help of: Nero Catalano (guitar), Jordan Block (bass), Gretchen Lohse (violin and viola), Ryan Williams (vocals), Naeemah Maddox (vocals), Alexander Cummings (saxophone), Shabree Johnson (trumpet), Stephen Williams (trombone), C.J. Gallo (bass), and Skip Diggerson (drums).

Here’s the opening track, “Bouffant Bang” from Berry Jones – ‘Tonight’:

The Spinning Leaves host The Philly Folk Parade: Night #2 @ The Fire

Last night (May 11, 2010) was the 2nd night of The Philly Folk Parade Tuesday nights in May residency at The Fire (412 W Girard Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19123) and as expected with the caliber of talent on the bill it was phenomenal.  Johnny Miles and The Waywards opened the show with a great performance that made me realize that I really need to pay more attention to Miles’ music – it’s that good!  Oh my, The Phil D’Agostino Quintet is amazing!  Now, you might have seen Phil D’Agostino play bass (or several other instruments) as a member of a number of Philly bands but none of that compares to seeing The Phil D’Agostino Quintet live – you owe it to yourself to do so.  Hearing Spirit and Dust playing the back room stage led to one of those rare but perfect moments when you realize you now have another new favorite band.  Oh, I love when that happens!  The captivating quality of Psalmships’ music is unreal, spectacular, and breathtaking.  Last, but by no means least, was The Spinning Leaves – the hosts for the night and they did a great job of it and had an excellent closing set.  Also, on the bill were Shannon Pelcher and Hoots & Hellmouth who each did their parts to add to the wonderful night of music.  Thank you to everyone who played!

I’ll see everyone next week for night 3 (May 18, 2010) of The Philly Folk Parade residency.  Chris Kasper will be hosting that night with: The Doublewides, Birdie Busch, Cowmuddy, and more artists.

The final night of The Philly Folk Parade – May 25, 2010 will be hosted by Hezekiah Jones.

The Philly Folk Parade: May Residency — The Fire

Currently, The Philly Folk Parade is a 4 shows, every Tuesday night in May, residency at The Fire.  The event was organized by The Spinning Leaves and Hezekiah Jones.  Each Tuesday will feature a different host and a different bill of artists performing.

The first night of the residency (May 4, 2010) was hosted by The Great Unknown.  The sets alternated from the front stage to the back room allowing for more music which was a great idea.  So, between the 2 stages there were performances by:  Jack Ohly, Sean Hoots, Sisters 3, Warren Longmire (spoken word poet), The Great Unknown, Joshua Park, and Toy Soldiers.  All the artists performed such great sets that made for a truly incredible night of music.

It’s really nice to see The Philly Folk Parade growing and influencing the Philly music community in a positive way.  With the momentum and energy this parade has I see nothing but great things for The Philly Folk Parade in the future.

The Review: A Look At Shows Past

Anson B Nixon Park 002

I would love to be able to blog as soon as I’ve seen a show but lately that just isn’t possible.  I guess I go to too many shows and just don’t always have the time to sit down and write something “blog worthy”.  So, for now this is how we’ll catch-up on show reviews.
