Live Review: The Everthere: Debut Show @ The Grape Room (8/5/11)

The Everthere

Friday night was the debut show by the Philadelphia-based rock band, The Everthere.  The Everthere is Fran Camardella (vocals, guitar), Greg Maragos (vocals, bass), and Dave Faga (drums) – all former members of Quick Step John. This particular performance featured Jamie Orlando on keys.  I really enjoyed The Everthere’s music and I’m glad I got to experience it live firsthand.  Well, I was only at The Grape Room to see The Everthere so when their set was over I was gone.  It’s always reassuring to a music enthusiast to know that there are still bands out there like The Everthere creating great music.

If you missed this show, no worries, you can catch The Everthere at The Grape Room on September16, 2011 for their CD release show.  Be there.

Live Review: Chris Kasper, Chris Grunwald – April Residency at The Grape Room: 2nd Show (April 12, 2011)

Chris Kasper at The Grape Room, 4/12/11

Yes, another Tuesday night in April and you know where I was – The Grape Room, of course.  It was the second show of the Chris Kasper/Chris Grunwald dual residency. So, this week’s show opened with a set by Patrick Dyer Wolf, a singer-songwriter from North Carolina.  Wolf is on tour with Megan Slankard, a singer-songwriter from California.  Wolf and Slankard were a nice addition to the Tuesday night bill and I enjoyed both of their sets.  Chris Grunwald and band played next and brought some fabulously groovy vibes to the room and everyone seemed to be rockin’ along.  Chris Kasper (with Philip D’Agostino and Kiley Ryan) closed out the show with a rather loose yet musically outstanding set.  Only a gifted singer-songwriter like Kasper could have the audience hanging on to every single note.  Ok, maybe I can’t speak for everyone but I know that look when someone is so into the music that they’re practically mesmerized.  Everyone was treated to some of Kasper’s new material which sounds great.  I was unaware of Chris Grunwald’s and Zach Djanikian’s drumming ability until I saw them fill in on drums with Kasper for a few songs each.  Great set!

REMEMBER… there are 2 more Tuesdays left in April so I highly recommend you come to The Grape Room for the remaining shows of the Chris Kasper/Chris Grunwald dual residency.

Live Review: Chris Kasper, Chris Grunwald, Paul Luc at The Grape Room (April 5, 2011)

Sundown

Last night kicked-off the month long Tuesday night residency at The Grape Room for Chris Kasper and Chris GrunwaldPaul Luc was on the bill too.  Luc is a singer-songwriter from Pittsburgh, PA.  It was an acoustic set with Luc (vocals, guitar) and Whitey (keys, vocals).  For my first listen of Luc’s music I was impressed and really enjoyed it.  Chris Grunwald Band played next.  I like Grunwald’s music so it’s always a nice treat to hear him play.  Even better, there are three more Tuesdays left in April to hear more of his music. Last, but most definitely not least was…Chris Kasper!  A word to the wise, if Chris Kasper is on the bill – be there.  I saw Kasper a few weeks ago at The North Star Bar and that was a great show.  Last night was another great show too.  Kasper was joined by Phil D’Agostino (bass, vocals), Kiley Ryan (fiddle, vocals, glockenspiel, banjo) and Kevin Killen (drums).  Live music is so dynamic which is part of its lure.  What, another chance to hear Kasper’s music? Oh, I will receive perfect attendance for this residency.

Tuesday nights at The Grape Room:
April 12: Chris Kasper, Chris Grunwald, Megan Slankard, Patrick Dyer Wolf
April 19: Andrew Ryan, Chris Kasper, Chris Grunwald, Up the Chain, Ryan Tennis
April 26: Chris Kasper, Chris Grunwald, Matt Spitko, Adam Brodsky

See you Tuesday!

Live Review: Pawnshop Roses, The Violet Tone, Steph Hayes, Mike Pfeiffer at The Grape Room (3/11/11)

The Grape Room, Philadelphia, PA

Last night’s live music adventure led me to The Grape Room

When I finally arrived at The Grape Room (parking in Manayunk can be hectic) it was sometime during Mike Pfeiffer’s set.  It was a rather simple arrangement of Mike Pfeiffer (vocals, guitar) with a bassist and drummer.  For my first introduction to Pfeiffer’s music I’d have to say it was ok, then again I can’t say that I gave Pfeiffer my undivided attention.  Sorry.

Steph Hayes and was next on the bill accompanied by Chris Schutz (bass) and a drummer.  I’ve seen Hayes perform a few times before and she always delivers good, quality music – and last night was no exception.  It was a good set of musical storytelling by way of song, which is what great songwriting is all about.  Needless to say, her set was enjoyable.

Truth be told, the only reason I was at The Great Room was to see Pawnshop Roses.  In case you don’t know, Pawnshop Roses is a modern take on old school rock ‘n’ roll with influences from several other genres fused in.  In some ways Pawnshop Roses is unclassifiable, non-genre specific, multi-style music goodness – and that’s what I call an incredible band.  Last night’s show was a lot of fun, great performance, and the new material is superb.  Might I add, Paul Keen’s (vocals) stage moves are entertaining yet genuine. So, I proudly call myself a Pawnshop Roses fan.  I highly recommend you experience Pawnshop Roses yourself and when you become a fan you can thank me later.

By the time The Violet Tone finished setting up it was too late for me so I left hoping that I might catch that band some other time when I can give their performance a proper review.

It was another great night of music at The Grape Room.

Album Review: Joe D’Amico – Asleep In My Shoes

JoeD'Amico-AsleepInMyShoes Joe D’Amico
Asleep In My Shoes
(2011)

Track list:
1. Listen To The Summer
2. Asleep In My Shoes
3. Monsters
4. Better Days
5. Listen To The Loons
6. Blind Bird
7. It’s Been So Long
8. White Horse 04:04
9. Manager 03:36
10. Sad Dog 03:33
11. Late Nights (Early Mornings)

I know Joe D’Amico because he’s a member of Mason Porter and that’s one of my favorite bands.  Mason Porter’s music is so good.  I recently got a taste of Joe D’Amico’s solo music endeavor from his Tuesday night residency at The Grape Room this past January.  Hearing D’Amico’s songs live made me excited to hear his new album.  Well, after listening to Asleep In My Shoes by Joe D’Amico I can honestly say that it is a magnificent album.

Asleep In My Shoes shows off Joe D’Amico’s great songwriting skills with so many memorable lyrics. My most favorite lyric can be heard on the title track, “Asleep In My Shoes”, “self destructing 3-4-2-1 of the reasons I’m ugly – I’ll never open my heart — to give or to learn or to simply return the love I’m given.”  D’Amico has a lovely voice and tone that conveys emotion nicely. There is a diverse selection of styles and genres sampled but indie rock is probably the most fitting.  Never underestimate the value of a well placed, harmonized, “ba-da-da” (“Listen To The Summer”), “oow” (“Better Days”), or “la-de-da” (“Listen To The Loons”).  “Blind Bird” is succinct and sweet – and greatly enjoyed.   The last track, “Late Nights (Early Mornings)”, is the only song that reminded me of Mason Porter which is a good thing because this is not a Mason Porter album (no disrespect intended).  Asleep In My Shoes is a wonderfully multilayered album where each listen reveals a new awe-inspiring sound and that’s an amazing feat and a great musical accomplishment.

This album harbors moments of sound reminiscent of The Beatles-esque grandness to more intimate, solo moments often exemplified by Tyler Ramsey (of Band of Horses fame). I only say that with the utmost respect and admiration for all artists involved.  So, yes, I really, really, really like this album!  Thank you, Joe D’Amico (Dan Bower, Bethany Brooks, Chris D’Amico, Brad Hinton, Gary Lebiedzinski, and everyone else who worked on this album), for making my ears smile.

Live Review: Cowmuddy, Chris Schutz and the Tourists, The Fractals @ The Grape Room (Sep 14, 2010)

The Grape Room

Tuesday night at The Grape Room (Manayunk/Philadelphia, PA) was like hanging out in the perfect listening room.

The Fractals delivered an excellent set which goes to show that sometimes loose, somewhat laid back, fun sets are the most memorable.  I’ve seen The Fractals a few times before but last night was my favorite performance of theirs to date.  Sometimes we can all use some good rock/pop with latent jazz elements styled music in our lives.  You can catch The Fractals at The Grape Room the following Tuesdays in September for their residency.

I was reintroduced to Chris Schutz and the Tourists last night for I’m positive that I’ve seen them before at some point.  Anyway, I liked their set and their pleasingly diverse sound.  Their songs where good enough to hold my musical interest which is all I could have hoped for.

Finally it was time for Cowmuddy (and band: Ross Bellenoit, Freddie Berman, and Jim Stager) to take the stage.  First off, I’ve seen Cowmuddy enough times to know how incredible a singer/songwriter he is, plus I’m all for the style of Folk Rock that Cowmuddy is known for.  Cowmuddy is also a great storyteller and you never know what gem of knowledge he will impart but it’s always positive with subtle comical delivery.  By the way, I have no clue what that special guest musician was playing (I’ll call it a futuristic melodica for it had an impressive electronica sound) but it created some lush soundscapes.  So, thanks to Cowmuddy for great music and laughter – 2 things that make life better.

All in all, it was a great night of music at The Grape Room.

Ben Arnold: Tuesday Night Residency @ The Grape Room – June + July 2010

Tuesday nights have been fairly lackluster since The Philly Folk Parade residency at The Fire (Philadelphia, PA) wrapped up at the end of May.  Well, Tuesday nights are fun again now that Ben Arnold has a residency at The Grape Room (Philadelphia, PA).  I missed the first night of Arnold’s residency on June 8th with Huffamoose (a reunion show) but I was there for the second night of the residency this past Tuesday, June 15th.  On that bill was, of course, Ben Arnold with Citizens Band Radio, and Chris Grunwald.  Chris Grunwald preformed a good solo set of music and I really liked what I heard.  Ben Arnold (and band: Zach Djanikian, Adam Flicker, Matt Muir, and Eric S.) played the penultimate set which I really enjoyed.  Now, I don’t have much history with Arnold’s music and I would consider myself a somewhat new fan but based on that performance, a representation of the new material on Simplify (upcoming release), I’m excited to hear the new album.  Wow, Ben Arnold is such a great singer/songwriter and hearing him with a band is a fantastic musical experience.  Citizens Band Radio finished out the night with some powerful Americana, country rock tunes that I enjoyed a lot more than I had anticipated.  Overall, it was an excellent night thanks to Ben Arnold, Blinkin Lincoln Productions, The Grape Room and all the other artists that played.  Yep, there’s a good chance I’ll be there several more Tuesday nights during this residency.

Here’s how Ben Arnold’s residency at The Grape Room looks thus far:
6/08 – Ben Arnold w/ Huffamoose (reunion)
6/15 – Ben Arnold w/ Citizens Band Radio, and Chris Grunwald
6/22 – Ben Arnold w/ Late Night Drifters, and Reed Kendall
6/29 – Ben Arnold w/ Zach Djanikian Band, and Andrew Lipke
7/06 – Ben Arnold w/ Josh Komorowski Band, and Ben Carroll
7/13 – Ben Arnold w/ Julius Curcio Band, and Frank Brown
7/20 – Ben Arnold w/ Cowmuddy, and Lee Morgan
