Mason Porter to Release Limited Edition ‘Story of the Rifle’ at Philadelphia Folk Festival

Mason Porter - Story of the Rifle

In celebration of Mason Porter’s scheduled performance at the Philadelphia Folk Festival they are releasing a limited edition (only 50 copies available) album, ‘Story of the Rifle’.  The new album was recorded live in studio and is a mix of traditional folk and cover songs.  You can catch Mason Porter’s performance Saturday August 21st at 1:15pm on the WXPN stage.  While you’re at the festival you can pick up a copy of ‘Story of the Rifle’ at the merchandise tent starting Friday (while supplies last).

I was very excited to download “Creole Belle”, and “Wayfaring Stranger” from ‘Story of the Rifle’ available on the Mason Porter website (www.masonporter.com).  Listening to these tracks reminds me how much I enjoy that Mason Porter sound – it’s wonderful!

On our seven acres of organically managed beds, we produce vegetables and fruits for about 200 households through our CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture program, which is in its 14th season. We have also started two seasonal Farmers Markets as well as a Farm and School Partnership with a local elementary school. We created and administer the Sustainable Agriculture Internship Training Alliance of Southeastern Pennsylvania and encourage and facilitate new farmers and the start-up of new farms. We promote organic food production, local food production and the development of community around food production.

The Spinning Leaves host The Philly Folk Parade: Night #2 @ The Fire

Last night (May 11, 2010) was the 2nd night of The Philly Folk Parade Tuesday nights in May residency at The Fire (412 W Girard Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19123) and as expected with the caliber of talent on the bill it was phenomenal.  Johnny Miles and The Waywards opened the show with a great performance that made me realize that I really need to pay more attention to Miles’ music – it’s that good!  Oh my, The Phil D’Agostino Quintet is amazing!  Now, you might have seen Phil D’Agostino play bass (or several other instruments) as a member of a number of Philly bands but none of that compares to seeing The Phil D’Agostino Quintet live – you owe it to yourself to do so.  Hearing Spirit and Dust playing the back room stage led to one of those rare but perfect moments when you realize you now have another new favorite band.  Oh, I love when that happens!  The captivating quality of Psalmships’ music is unreal, spectacular, and breathtaking.  Last, but by no means least, was The Spinning Leaves – the hosts for the night and they did a great job of it and had an excellent closing set.  Also, on the bill were Shannon Pelcher and Hoots & Hellmouth who each did their parts to add to the wonderful night of music.  Thank you to everyone who played!

I’ll see everyone next week for night 3 (May 18, 2010) of The Philly Folk Parade residency.  Chris Kasper will be hosting that night with: The Doublewides, Birdie Busch, Cowmuddy, and more artists.

The final night of The Philly Folk Parade – May 25, 2010 will be hosted by Hezekiah Jones.

Hezekiah Jones and Family Sings Greatest Will Oldham Music @ World Cafe Live

Hezekiah Jones & Family (5/9/10) By: Lisa Schaffer

The music this night proved to be absolutely amazing and simply unreal.

Sunday night (May 9, 2010) I went to World Cafe Live to see Hezekiah Jones and Family perform Will Oldham’s music.  I don’t know Will Oldham’s music so I decided to attend the show with the hope of hearing “I Am a Cinematographer” – the only Will Oldham song I know.  Actually, the only reason why I know that song is because of Hezekiah Jones.  I thought that I might hear a song or two that I recognized and not realize that it was a Will Oldham song but that never happened.  Even still, Hezekiah Jones and Family had a real awe-inspiring set.  And it was quite amazing to see the effort and skill they put into their performance to bring Will Oldham’s music to life that night.  Unfortunately, like I said before, I’m not familiar enough with Oldham’s music to tell you the setlist but I do know that they closed the night with “I Am a Cinematographer” which was the icing on the cake.

All I have to say is – Hezekiah Jones (Raphael Cutrufello) and Family (Brad Hinton, Andrew Keenan, Joshua Park, Kiley Ryan, Joe D’Amico, Daniel Bower, Philip D’Agostino, Michael Baker, Barbara Gettes, Bob Beach, and Emily Bates) played with such gusto as if they were some folk force to be reckoned with.

Thank you, all!

The Philly Folk Parade: May Residency — The Fire

Currently, The Philly Folk Parade is a 4 shows, every Tuesday night in May, residency at The Fire.  The event was organized by The Spinning Leaves and Hezekiah Jones.  Each Tuesday will feature a different host and a different bill of artists performing.

The first night of the residency (May 4, 2010) was hosted by The Great Unknown.  The sets alternated from the front stage to the back room allowing for more music which was a great idea.  So, between the 2 stages there were performances by:  Jack Ohly, Sean Hoots, Sisters 3, Warren Longmire (spoken word poet), The Great Unknown, Joshua Park, and Toy Soldiers.  All the artists performed such great sets that made for a truly incredible night of music.

It’s really nice to see The Philly Folk Parade growing and influencing the Philly music community in a positive way.  With the momentum and energy this parade has I see nothing but great things for The Philly Folk Parade in the future.

The Spinning Leaves is the Philly folk group of Barbara Gettes and Michael Baker who share songwriting credit (both individually and jointly) on their newest release ‘Love’.  An album that shows The Spinning Leaves at their best – delivering musical greatness through the words they so eloquently sing and the music they play so wonderfully.  The two major themes that run through this entire album are love (as the album title would suggest) and a sense of freedom.  ‘Love’ starts with “The Promontory Wind” a song that opens with some welcoming shouts, clear cut sound of a harmonica, and at that instant I knew that I was in for some folk fun – The Spinning Leaves style.  “Bridges For Free” is probably the closest to being the title track and holds the powerful lyrics: “Love landed somewhere in Philadelphia and sat with a movement – a movement for change “.  “Transistor Radio” is a fun sounding tune and an excellent display of Gettes’ beautiful voice.  The only spoken-word track is “Together” as told by a child.  “Marigolds” has a very interesting arrangement (gotta love that sitar) that works so perfectly with Baker’s vocal tone and is smoothed over by a precious chorus.  “Through endless skies they danced and twirled with those who’ve passed on from this world” – sometimes you just have to stop and marvel in the lyrical imagery of “A Tale of the Northern Lights” and many of the other songs on this album.  “Lonely Firefly” ends the album with a hootenanny or sorts and the final cry of “Freedom!”  The Spinning Leaves’ ‘Love’ is one mighty fine listening experience for it takes on so many different styles all based in some form of folk music that I’m sure many will enjoy as much as I do.

The Review: A Look At Shows Past

Anson B Nixon Park 002

I would love to be able to blog as soon as I’ve seen a show but lately that just isn’t possible.  I guess I go to too many shows and just don’t always have the time to sit down and write something “blog worthy”.  So, for now this is how we’ll catch-up on show reviews.

Excited Light presents The Philly Folk Parade at World Cafe Live (August 2, 2009)

PHL FolkParade 8-2-09

I first heard about The Philly Folk Parade a couple months ago and was in disbelief that so many of my favorite Philly artists were going to share the same bill.  So, when August 2nd finally came around I went to The Philly Folk Parade downstairs at World Cafe Live and what I witnessed was like a dream come true.
